OTTAWA, December 16, 2010: The School of Dance is pleased to announce that Goddess, created by Ottawa artist Audrey Greyeyes, is the image that will represent the Dance of Life programmes and projects. Dance of Life is The School's newest community health initiative taking place throughout Ottawa with support from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.
The original drawing of Goddess, ink on rice paper, is owned by Vreni Tanner. The School of Dance thanks both Audrey Greyeyes and Vreni Tanner for so graciously allowing Goddess to be used as a symbol for The School's important community work in wellness and body image.
AUDREY GREYEYES has been exhibiting in the Ottawa area for over twenty years. Critics have from the start described her art as "powerful with freedom in her colours and forms that stamps her as an original artist." Audrey studied at the Ottawa School of Art in a self-directed program. Following her grandfather's advice who told her she must be a Cree person of her own time, she chose to concentrate on contemporary portraiture and figurative work. Her art is in the collection of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada as well as private collections. On joining The School of Dance Artist-In-Residence programme in 2003, Audrey said, "I like the environment that The School creates and the thinking that sustains this vibrant artistic community. AIR has enabled me to talk with students and visitors, to contribute to projects and to share ideas." As for her art, Audrey says, "the energy generated in The School is a catalyst for my work."
