The School of Dance today announced that the Stuart Conger Centre for Learning has begun a new archival project to catalogue the hundreds of music scores and musical notes that have been donated to The School over the last thirty-two years. The collection includes: rare ballet class scores annotated by international ballet dancer Toni Lander of Denmark; ballet scores annotated by the late Celia Franca, Co-Artistic Director of The School of Dance 1979-2007 and founder of the National Ballet of Canada; hand-written musical notes created by great Canadian film-maker Norman McLaren for his Oscar award winning film "Neighbours". The collection also includes opera notes by Benjamin Britten and piano arrangements by George Crumb as well as compositions written for and given to The School by The School's musicians and students.
"We are so proud that the Stuart Conger Centre for Learning is part of The School of Dance," said Merrilee Hodgins, Artistic Director of The School of Dance. "Stuart Conger is a visionary who understands the importance of educating young people to think deeply, to observe with clarity, to listen with open ears and to work with purpose. It is a pleasure to have his help and support in the archiving of our dance and music."
In 2007, The School announced the opening of the Stuart Conger Centre for Learning. The Centre, named for Stuart Conger to acknowledge his years of dedicated support of The School, resides inside Studio 5 of The School and in the Main Office. A growing library of fascinating materials, the Stuart Conger Centre for Learning is home to 250 dances tapes and DVDs and over 1,200 art, history and general knowledge books. From 2007-2010, The School's 32 year collection of choreographic material was archived and catalogued and is now available to young choreographers for research. The 2010-2011 corridor is being used to archive The School's music collection.
